Navigation and discovery solve different problems
Traditional map apps are excellent when you already know the destination. They optimize routes, business details and practical arrival. Discovery begins earlier: you may know only that you want coffee, a walk, an event or somewhere lively nearby.
A useful discovery app should explain why a place fits the moment. Recent activity, notes from people, time of day and nearby events often matter more than a large review total.
Look for context, freshness and control
Check whether results can be filtered by distance, category and time. Look for current, location-based signals rather than anonymous lists copied across the web. Saving should also be flexible: collections for a trip, neighborhood or mood are easier to reuse than one endless favorites list.
Privacy matters. A social feature should make sharing choices clear, distinguish public and private collections, and avoid turning location into pressure to broadcast constantly.
Where a social map is different
